Lord Alfred Henry Paget was born on 26 June 1816, the fourth son of Field Marshal Sir Henry William Paget, 1st Marquess of Anglesey, and Lady Charlotte Cadogan. He married in 1847 Cecilia Wyndham. They had 14 children.

He initially had a military careeer, being a Lieutenant in the Royal Horse Guards, and later a Lieutenant-Colonel (unattached to a regiment). He was the Liberal Member of Parliament for Lichfield from 1837 until 1865, and a Director of the North Staffs Railway Company from 1854 until 1875. He was appointed Chief Equerry and Clerk Marshal to the Queen from 1846 until 1874, with two short gaps in this service. He died on 24 August 1888.
